Ever since beginning to see clients in a massage therapy setting, I have given a surprising amount of people their first massage. When this happens, I find myself reflecting on my first experience receiving treatment. It can be a time where a lot of questions arise. What do I wear? What are they going to do for an hour? What if the pressure is too much or not enough, will they be offended if I tell them?
To make it easy, I’ll give a brief walk through of how I go about a treatment.
I will meet you in the waiting room (where you will have completed some quick and easy paperwork) and we will head to the treatment room. We’ll have a quick chat about what brings you in today, and what you would like to get out of the treatment. After that, I will conduct an assessment based on the issues you are having so I can get a better idea of what is going on and how to direct my treatment.
Once I have some findings, I’ll give you an overview of how the treatment will go and what areas I will be working on. Then I leave to room to wash my hands, and you get on the table. Time to answer the question about level of undressing: it’s simple, just undress to whatever level you feel comfortable. Sheets are used during the massage to always keep you appropriately draped, so some choose to wear their undergarments, others may prefer to leave only their socks on, it’s all up to you! With that in mind, skin to skin contact is ideal so I can use lotion and give a more effective massage.
Communication is very important during a massage. I explain what I’ll be doing and you, as the client relay information on how things are feeling back to me. If you want the pressure to be more or less, just say so! My feelings won’t be hurt, as long as you are comfortable, we are both happy.
We will work through the treatment and once our time is up, and you’re feeling good, I’ll exit the room and you can get dressed.
When you’re all set, I will come back and give you some homework. Nothing crazy, just an exercise or two that will help you progress and contribute to resolving whatever you have come in for.
If you’ve never had a massage before hopefully this helped to answer some of your questions, once again your comfort is the priority!
